misumi tanaka and her twin brother, kaito tanaka were born to loving parents, anzu and renzo tanaka. their father, renzo, worked as a blacksmith for the demon slayer corps and was a retired demon slayer. their mother, anzu, was a healer. kaito was the older twin by ten minutes, though he was born just five minutes before midnight and misumi born at five minutes past midnight on the following day. unfortunately, anzu passed away from birth complications. the twins never got to meet their mom.when misumi and kaito turned eight years old, they began to assist their father with their family business. kaito helped his father with the blacksmith work while misumi learned about medicine from her mother's journals and notes. in his spare time, renzo trained kaito to be a demon slayer while misumi refused training. she wanted to be like her mother and continue her work as a healer. both misumi and kaito preferred this arrangement, though misumi did agree to have some training but for self-defense only.for the next seven years, the tanaka family lived well. they were not wealthy by any means but were able to survive comfortably. on their thirteenth birthday, kaito decided to train officially with the demon slayer corps. renzo had suffered a knee injury during his time as a demon slayer and it only got worse with time and age. it was kaito who decided he would leave to officially train with the demon slayer corps. kaito and his father argued for hours but kaito was firm in his decision. he left the following day. it was the first time misumi had ever been away from her brother and found herself quite lonely. her father and her got along, but very much clashing personalities. she begged her father to move to the local village where she could meet other people and have a life. renzo refused, claiming it was his ancestors' home and that's where he would die.it had been three years since kaito left and misumi grew lonely since his departure. he hadn't returned home once and she worried about him. her father assured her that he was safe and he couldn't afford to come home. misumi continued to train with her father until he wasn't able to. the following winter was harsh and he had fallen quite ill due to the extreme cold temperatures. despite misumi's efforts to keep them alive, her father passed away in his sleep. now, the girl was truly alone.she managed to survive until spring, scraping by off of poorly made animal traps and anything she could scrounge together. when the weather began to change, misumi took the opportunity to find her brother. she left the tanaka home for good, never to return. she had a small back on her shoulder and her father's sword on her back. she looked like a child playing soldier but she needed to protect herself. after all, there are worse things than demons to a girl wandering alone.misumi wandered from village to village in search of her brother or any word of his whereabouts. no one had heard anything about kaito tanaka. she spent months searching for him before finding herself in the entertainment district, completely in awe of the lights and the strange people. she found work in the kyogoku house by mistake after being complimented by the oiran. she had taken a certain fondness over misumi and misumi, alone and homeless, agreed to work for her and take on clients.six months later, word of a demon slayer in the entertainment district went around and for once, misumi felt optimistic in finding her brother. she snuck out during odd hours, searching for this demon slayer. after two days of searching, she finally found the slayer. misumi begged for information about her brother and the slayer only shook his head -- he had battled an upper rank demon, his comrades had abandoned him to fight the demon alone. the slayer wasn't sure of her brother's outcome but was presumed dead.misumi felt devastated and anger, blaming herself for not searching for him harder, for not going with him. she would never forgive herself for letting him go alone. though she carried her father's sword, she was not a demon slayer. but the hatred and anger in her heart did not care; she would avenge her brother. she took off the next morning, wandering once more in search of her brother's killer.misumi travelled with the demon slayer, whose name was yamato nakamura, studying his techniques. he explained to her that he studied wind breathing under the current wind hashira and that her brother, kaito, studied with him. the day he was sent to slay the demon, yamato had received a different mission. he expressed great guilt and sadness to misumi, wishing they had taken it on together. this was why he had asked misumi to accompany him, to make up to not being there for kaito. though he was nowhere skilled like the hashira, yamato was an excellent demon slayer and he taught misumi all he knew.misumi took to her father's blade with more ease than before, perhaps due to her strong will of avenging her brother. he corrected her forms and taught her as much as he knew about wind breathing. it soon became second nature to her, almost like breathing. her desire to avenge her brother fueled her and she became almost unrecognizable. the little girl who never wanted to yield a blade now swung it as though it was an extension of herself.after a year of travelling with yamato, the pair finally found the upper rank demon deep in a forest not too far away from the old tanaka home. she found it odd that the demon who killed her brother was not too far from their old homestead. yamato warned her to stay back while he investigated but she refused and went ahead. misumi looked at the demon in horror when it turned to face her. it was kaito, turned into a demon. yamato caught up with her and he, too, looked at kaito in horror at the realization.kaito begged misumi to join him, so that they'd always be together and never be separated from each other. misumi almost gave in until yamato stepped between them, trying to talk misumi out of it. enraged that yamato was interferring with family affairs, kaito killed him. yamato didn't have a moment to even raise his blade. misumi watched in horror as her companion laid dead at her feet from her brother's hand. kaito continued to try and persuade misumi to join him, than muzan kibutsuji would welcome her as he did with her. his left eye bore a number four rank and she couldn't help but fear her brother and this muzan kibutsuji.instead of taking or killing her, kaito left her to think about his offer. he'd come back in seven days to their family home. if she was there, then that meant she would join him. if she did not show, it mean that she would become his enemy. and with that, he vanished. misumi fell to her knees and wept. she wept for yamato, her demon brother, and for herself for making the tough choice.misumi returned to the tanaka home a day before kaito said he would arrive. her mother and father's grave remained, though nature had reclaimed them. she thought back to her childhood, how much she loved her father and brother. all of that was gone now. misumi grabbed what she could of the journals her mother and father left of their crafts, wishing to continue her medical and swordsmanship skills. she lit a match and threw it on the wooden floor, the old hut igniting into flame. she burned the home down and never looked back.misumi tanaka is now an unofficial demon slayer. while she does not have the title, she does have the knowledge and skills of a demon slayer. having no home, friends, or family, she wanders the country slaying demons that cross her path. villagers have dubbed her the wraith for her sudden appearances and disappearances. she has learned how to slip into the shadows without being detected or caught. occasionally, she'll team up with a demon slayer but leaves once the fight is done. she belongs to no one but herself. misumi knows her brother is out there somewhere. she's made it her mission to find and put an end to him, even if it destroys her.
